The director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Peter Marks, MD, PhD, will deliver this year’s keynote speech at the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s (MDA) 2023 Clinical & Scientific Conference, according to a press release from the association.

The conference, which will be held between March 19 and March 22, 2023, at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, TX, and virtually will explore the latest advancements in research and achievement in the clinic in the field of neuromuscular diseases.

“It’s my privilege to be a part of this important global gathering convened by the Muscular Dystrophy Association,” Dr. Marks said. “Genetic therapies for neuromuscular diseases are now entering an unprecedented period of clinical translation. I’m looking forward to addressing the unique needs for drug development and regulatory oversight of gene therapies and other genetic medicines.”

Last year, the MDA conference was attended by 1028 delegates in person and more than 691 delegates online. It featured 32 sessions, 43 exhibitions, and 10 industry forums.

Registration for this year’s conference, which will have a special focus on emerging technologies in genetic medicine are now open.

The MDA supports people living with muscular dystrophy including Duchenne muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular conditions. Its aim is to accelerate research, advance care, and advocate for the support of people affected by these conditions.

The aim of the FDA’s CBER is to ensure the safety and effectiveness of biological products including vaccines, antiallergenics, and gene therapies.
